A permanent disability is one that is likely to be lifelong. A significant disability is one that affects your ability to complete everyday tasks, participate in the community, or live independently without ongoing support.
No. You must be under 65 years old at the time you apply. People over 65 may be eligible for support through the aged care system instead.
You must be: An Australian citizen, or A permanent resident, or A Protected Special Category Visa holder
You’ll need medical or allied health evidence confirming: Your diagnosis How your disability affects daily life Whether your condition is permanent What supports you require Evidence can come from GPs, specialists, psychologists, OTs, physios, speech therapists, and other qualified professionals.
The NDIA generally makes an access decision within 21 days of receiving all required information. If more evidence is needed, it may take longer.
Early Intervention provides support for conditions that may not be permanent but could improve with early treatment. This pathway is often used for children or people with newly diagnosed conditions.
